Nafeesah Allen is a native of Vailsburg. She is a Foreign Service Officer with the US Department of State, as well as an academic. She graduated cum laude from Barnard College in 2006 and completed a Masters of International Affairs at Columbia University with a certificate in Latin American studies and a concentration in race and social policy. In 2013, she completed a postgraduate diploma in Folklore & Cultural Studies at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in New Delhi and won IGNOU’s Gold Medal for meritorious academic performance for her thesis on women’s identity & remembrance in the Indian Diaspora. She is currently a PhD student at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg focusing on Indian subcontinent migration to Mozambique in the 20th century. She is currently serving a tour at the US Embassy in Mozambique, after having served in New Delhi, India for 2 years and in Washington, DC focusing on the US – Pakistan bilateral relationship.
